Is Tropical Islands worth it for families with children?

For families willing to spend a full day (6–8 hours minimum to justify entry cost and travel), yes. Tropical Islands is an indoor waterpark inside a former airship hangar, kept at 26°C year-round, with slides, pools, an indoor beach, a lazy river, and outdoor waterpark space in summer. Day tickets cost €39–44 per adult and €25–28 per child (ages 3+). It's 75 km south of Berlin — about 45–60 minutes by regional train to Halbe station, then a shuttle bus. A car simplifies logistics considerably.

Is Tropical Islands worth the trip from Berlin? For families with children aged 3–14 who can spend a full day (6–8 hours), yes — it’s a genuinely unusual experience: an indoor tropical environment at 26°C year-round, regardless of what’s happening outside, with waterslides, pools, an indoor beach, and a lazy river. Day tickets cost €39–44 per adult, €25–28 per child. The 60–90 minute journey from Berlin is offset by the all-day capacity of the destination.

What Tropical Islands actually is

Tropical Islands occupies the former CargoLifter airship production hangar at Brand-Briesen Airfield, approximately 75 km south of Berlin. The hangar was built to construct giant helium airships; the project collapsed financially in 2002, and the hangar — at the time one of the largest freestanding structures in the world — was converted into a permanent indoor resort.

The space is large enough to contain the Eiffel Tower lying on its side. Inside, the operator (Center Parcs, which took over from original operator Tropical Islands GmbH) maintains a permanent tropical environment at 26°C with controlled humidity. This means it’s warm, humid, and summer-feeling on a grey November day in Brandenburg.

It is not a world-class luxury waterpark by Spanish or Czech standards. It is an unusual, family-oriented, reliably warm indoor resort that works across a broad age range and requires no good weather to visit. As a day trip or overnight from Berlin, it’s the only thing quite like it within 200 km.

Waterpark facilities

Indoor areas (open year-round)

Tropical Sea (Südsee): The main indoor pool area, with a large wave pool, a children’s splash area (shallow pool with water features, suitable from age 0), and lane swimming. The wave machine activates at scheduled intervals (typically every 20–30 minutes).

Lazy River (Wildwasser): A slow-moving current loop approximately 500 metres long. All ages can use it. Children under 6 should be with an adult. Life jackets (Schwimmwesten) are provided at no charge for non-swimmers.

Tropical Beach (Tropenlandschaft): An indoor beach with real sand, maintained at full tropical temperature. Deck chairs, beach volleyball, parasols, and the indoor lake frontage. This is where most families spend non-slide time.

Slides: Multiple indoor slides ranging from children’s gentle slides (no minimum height) to speed slides and tube slides with height requirements (typically 1.20 m). Queue times vary — the most popular slides take 20–40 minutes in peak periods.

Sauna world: A separate adults-only area (16+) in the hangar’s western section. Not relevant for family visits with children.

Outdoor areas (seasonal, approximately May–September)

An outdoor waterpark — TROPICAL WATER WORLD — with additional slides, outdoor pools, and sunbathing areas operates in warm months. Entry is included in the day ticket. This significantly increases the range of slides available in summer.

Getting there from Berlin

By train (no car)

  1. Take the RE3 or RB43 regional train from Berlin Südkreuz or Berlin Ostbahnhof to Halbe station.
  2. Journey time: approximately 50–60 minutes.
  3. Ticket: ABC zone single journey — adult €11.80 one-way (or use the small group day ticket ABC: €36.80 for up to 5 people all day).
  4. At Halbe station, take the Tropical Islands shuttle bus to the entrance (approximately 10 minutes).

Important: The shuttle bus from Halbe is not frequent. Times are posted on the Tropical Islands website. Check the last shuttle back to Halbe before arriving — missing it means an expensive taxi or a very long wait. In peak season, the shuttle runs more frequently; in off-peak periods it may only run a few times per day.

By car

Direct A13 motorway (Berliner Ring) south from Berlin to the “Brand” exit, then follow signs to Tropical Islands. Journey time: approximately 50–60 minutes from central Berlin. Ample free parking on-site. A car significantly improves logistics, particularly with young children, overnight bags, and flexible timing for departure.

The overnight option: is it worth it?

For families travelling from Berlin, overnight accommodation at Tropical Islands often makes better sense than a day trip:

Arguments for overnight:

  • The travel time (60–90 min each way) consumes less proportional value over 2 days than over 1 day
  • Early morning access to the waterpark before crowds arrive is one of the best times to visit
  • Evening entertainment (light shows, performance acts, children’s programmes in the hangar) is included
  • Children get a full second morning in the water before checkout
  • The experience feels like a minibreak rather than a rushed day trip

Accommodation types inside and near the hangar:

  • Bali bungalows (inside hangar): Wood-frame bungalows on the “beach” inside the tropical environment — genuinely unusual to wake up in a tropically heated room.
  • Tent village (Zeltdorf): Canvas tents with beds inside the hangar — more economical, more atmospheric
  • Cabins and chalets (outside): Standard cabin accommodation outside the main hangar, cheaper than indoor options

Pricing: Overnight package prices vary hugely by season, room type, and advance booking. Check tropicalislands.de directly — packages change frequently and can range from €80 to €250 per night for a family unit, typically including day-entry for the stay period.

Who Tropical Islands is best for

Excellent for:

  • Families with children aged 3–14 spending a full day or overnight
  • Families visiting Berlin in autumn, winter, or spring who want guaranteed warmth and water
  • Children who love water play but have exhausted Berlin’s city attractions
  • Groups with mixed ages — the facility genuinely accommodates all ages from infants to grandparents

Less suitable for:

  • Families with very limited time — you need a minimum of 5–6 hours to justify the journey
  • Children who don’t enjoy water activities at all (the park is almost entirely water-focused)
  • Visitors expecting a sophisticated spa or upmarket resort — it’s a family leisure venue, not a luxury property
  • Families in Berlin for only 2 days who have a full city agenda — prioritise Berlin city attractions first

Combining with Spreewald

Tropical Islands and the Spreewald forest canals are in the same general direction from Berlin (south, on the A13/B179 corridor). If you have a car and are staying overnight at Tropical Islands, a morning canoe trip in the Spreewald (Lübbenau or Lehde, approximately 50 km west of Tropical Islands) on the same day as your Tropical Islands arrival makes a coherent 2-day family excursion from Berlin.

See the Berlin family day trips guide for Spreewald planning details.

Frequently asked questions about Tropical Islands with kids

  • How much does Tropical Islands cost for a family?
Day ticket prices (2026 approximate): adults (18+) €39–44, children (3–17) €25–28, under-3 free. A family of 2 adults + 2 children costs €128–144 for day entry alone. There are seasonal promotions and online advance pricing that can reduce this by €5–10 per person. Overnight accommodation (glamping, tents, bungalows) costs extra — see the Tropical Islands website for current packages.
  • How do you get to Tropical Islands from Berlin without a car?
Take the RE3 or RB43 regional train from Berlin Südkreuz or Ostbahnhof to Halbe station. Journey time is approximately 45–60 minutes. A shuttle bus runs between Halbe station and the Tropical Islands entrance — check the official Tropical Islands website for current shuttle times before travelling, as schedules are irregular and the last bus back must connect with your return train. Train fares from Berlin to Halbe are included in the ABC zone ticket (€11.80 per adult, free under-6).
  • What waterslides does Tropical Islands have?
Tropical Islands has multiple slide categories: children's play areas with gentle slides (suitable from age 3), multi-lane speed slides (minimum height requirements typically 1.20 m), tube slides for 1–2 riders, a wave pool, a lazy river (slow-moving current in a loop — good for all ages), and a boomerang slide. The outdoor summer waterpark (open approximately May–September) adds additional slides and pools. Specific slides and minimum height requirements change periodically; check the website for current slide availability.
  • Can you camp or stay overnight at Tropical Islands?
Yes — Tropical Islands has extensive on-site accommodation inside and adjacent to the hangar: Bali-style bungalows inside the hangar, glamping tents, and cabins. Staying overnight allows unlimited access to the waterpark for your stay period, which significantly improves the value calculation compared to a single day entry. Accommodation prices vary significantly by season — check tropicalislands.de for current rates. Booking advance is essential in summer and school holiday periods.
  • What age is Tropical Islands best for?
All ages work, but the experience is best for children aged 3–14 and their accompanying adults. Under-3s enter free but can only use the youngest children's areas. Ages 3–7 are well-served by the children's pools and gentle slides. Ages 8–14 access most of the slides with appropriate height. Teenagers and adults get full access to all slides and pools. The lazy river and wave pool work for all ages.
  • Is it worth staying overnight at Tropical Islands vs a day trip?
If you're travelling from Berlin, an overnight stay almost always makes better financial and experiential sense. The travel time (60–90 min each way) plus 6–8 hours in the park makes for a very long day. An overnight stay allows early-morning waterpark access before crowds arrive, full use of evening entertainment (there are shows and activities in the evening), and a more relaxed pace. Compare the overnight package cost against day entry + hotel cost in Berlin.
  • Is Tropical Islands crowded?
Peak periods are Berlin school holidays (Sommerferien in July/August, Herbstferien in October), weekends year-round, and public holidays. During peak summer, the main pools and popular slides can have queue times of 30–45 minutes. Weekday visits during Berlin school term are significantly less crowded. Book well in advance for school holiday periods — entry is capacity-managed and day tickets can sell out.
