Berlin packing essentials
Berlin has a continental climate — cold winters (often below -5 °C with wind chill), mild pleasant springs, warm but occasionally stormy summers (22–28 °C) and crisp golden autumns. The city sits on a flat plain with no altitude effect, but the weather can shift quickly: pack layers regardless of season. The centre is largely walkable but distances are large — comfortable shoes are essential, especially on Mitte's stone pavements and the cobblestones around Gendarmenmarkt.
Berlin's dress code is notoriously relaxed — the city prioritises individuality over formality. For club nights the rule is dark, comfortable clothing (trainers are fine at most venues — avoid sportswear logos). Cash is king in Berlin: many bars, clubs, street food stalls and even some restaurants are cash-only, so always carry at least €30–50 in EUR. A Berlin WelcomeCard or a loaded transit card on your phone will cover all U-Bahn and S-Bahn travel.
